What is Live Rock?
Live rock is one of the most important components of a reef aquarium. Live rock is essentially old coral skeletons that have been overgrown with new life. Quality live rock will contain a variety of organisms that help recycle wastes in the aquarium. It’s almost certain that any piece of live rock will contain bristle-worms, tube worms, copepods, amphipods, coralline algae, and beneficial bacteria. It’s not uncommon for larger invertebrates like crabs, shrimps, and corals to eventually grow and emerge from the rock. Be careful though, some “hitchhikers” are not desirable and should be removed.
